The fascinating effect of color

Oliver Riedl, Head of Development Raw Material, Operations and Coloring Projects at KRAIBURG TPE, talks about the fascination of color. What effect do colors have on us, how do colors determine a material selection and how are thermoplastic elastomers colored?

Colors influence our perception on many levels: They arouse emotions, draw attention and shape our decisions. In product development, they are far more than just decoration - they stand for quality, modernity and identity. Color also plays a central role in Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). It combines function with design - permanently, precisely and customized to the respective application.

The fascinating effect of color

Colors have a fascinating and diverse influence to us humans. They influence both our psyche and our physiological processes:

1

Colors can draw out emotions. For example, blue has a calming effect and promotes relaxation, while red has a stimulating and activating effect.

2

Colors influence our attention. It often happens that color awakens our interest. Just think of the creativity of car manufacturers who draw attention to their vehicles with their latest models and the associated colors.

3

We connect conditions with colors. For example, green is often associated with safety, it stands for growth, hope, health and naturalness.

These emotional reactions are deeply rooted in our perception and influence our daily lives. Colors are a result of electromagnetic waves (light) that trigger sensations in us humans. They are not only aesthetic, but also have an impact on our well-being and health.

It can also be an expression of product quality, or even the lack of it. When buying new toy bricks, just imagine that they don't match any of the existing colors.

Many organizations are involved in developing trend colors every year. Extensive research into news and events, trends, developments, habits, interests and surveys of people around the world are incorporated in several stages to set trends for all market segments, such as fashion, cosmetics, consumer goods or technology, and to emphasize modernity.
When selecting materials, it is therefore essential to pay attention to their aesthetic appearance in addition to their technical and functional properties.

So what is the color supposed to convey? Of course, it should be beautiful for the observer and arouse interest. At best, however, it should also generate an appropriate emotion. Depending on the application, it should appear delicate, harmonious, restrained or striking, lively and radiant. But perhaps even more important is the association with the brand, the recognition value and, last but not least, the purchase decision that counts.

Color therefore conveys far more than just pure appearance

Thermoplastic elastomers can be produced in all imaginable colors. By adding colorants, specific areas of the electromagnetic radiation of visible light are absorbed by the object and can therefore no longer trigger any stimuli. The remaining areas then make the object appear in the desired color.  Other colorants, e.g. effect pigments, can intensify such stimuli. An almost infinite freedom of design opens up for the designer when this technology is used correctly.

It's all in the mix

We at KRAIBURG TPE have the necessary expertise and are excellently equipped with a large selection of colorants and the necessary technology to make your products really stand out. Colors are a powerful tool that go far beyond pure aesthetics. Put in the right light, they have a powerful effect on people.
