Advancing Eye Drop Container Safety with Trusted TPE Materials

How can modern ophthalmic packaging ensure safety, reliability, and compliance? With THERMOLAST® H—offering strong PP/PE adhesion, secure sealing, sterilization compatibility, and biocompatibility for single-dose eye drop containers.

Single-dose eye drop containers are growing in popularity amid a consensus on end-user convenience, portability, and hygiene. For healthcare device manufacturers in the ophthalmic care segment, achieving high sterilizability, compact size, and robust build depends on high-quality medical-grade materials that deliver these benefits.

KRAIBURG TPE, a global manufacturer of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and customized material solutions for various industries, offers the high-performance THERMOLAST® H series, which meets the functionality, material safety, construction integrity, and sustainability standards required for eye care packaging.

Secure Sealing with Excellent Adhesion to PP and PE
THERMOLAST® H series exhibits excellent adhesion to both polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), enabling efficient multi-component injection molding of rigid container parts and ensuring a tight, leak-proof seal, which are essential for sterility and dose accuracy. Moreover, since most eye-drop bottles feature resealable caps or dispensing nozzles that must withstand repeated openings, this TPE series with its optimized compression set helps maintain consistent sealing force, keeping containers secure, tamper-resistant, and easy for patients to use

Color-Coding Branding and Dosing Accuracy
The THERMOLAST® H series provides excellent colorability, allowing for the differentiation of eye drop containers based on medication type, dosage strength, or brand identity. This customization aids in product identification and contributes to patient compliance by reducing the risk of medication errors.

Sterilizable and Biocompatible
The THERMOLAST® H series is suitable for sterilization by autoclave (121°C) and ethylene oxide (EtO), ensuring clean and hygienic use in ophthalmic containers. Additionally, these sterile materials comply with international food contact and medical safety standards, including ISO 10993-5 and GB/T 16886.5 (cytotoxicity), Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, US FDA CFR 21, and GB 4806.7-2023 (China), demonstrating their safety for both direct and indirect contact with patients and medications.

Ethically Conscious Material Choice
The THERMOLAST® H series is free from animal-derived ingredients, meeting clean-label requirements and adhering to current manufacturing standards for safety and transparency. This medical TPE compounds are well-suited for typical applications in ophthalmic packaging, including functional and design elements, seals, flexible connections, mouthpieces, and closures.
