Cooling Days 2023

From insulated plastic to integrated thermal management

17. - 18. October 2023

Vogel Convention Center Würzburg

LECTURE SESSION "Vom isolierten Kunststoff zum integrierten Wärmemanagement"

In this lecture, the materials thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) will be presented. TPEs combine the processing properties of thermoplastics with the softness and flexibility of elastomers. Classic TPE products are insulating materials that have no thermal conductivity. Like thermoplastics, TPEs become injection moldable and extrudable when heat is applied. After cooling, they return to their original elastic properties and can be recycled like thermoplastics.

Thermal conductivity is required for use as a heat-conducting material. This is where boron nitride can show its advantages. In addition to high thermal conductivity, boron nitride powder offers other useful properties, such as good temperature and abrasion resistance, low dielectric constant and excellent electrical insulation properties.

Thermal conductivity reaches values of over 10 W/m*K when combined with thermoplastics. Boron nitride turns a plastic with inadequate thermal conductivity properties into a heat conductor with simultaneous electrical insulation, thus offering considerable design freedom in the electronics sector. Examples will be shown to present results of TPE with thermal conductivity. In addition to thermal conductivity, the TPE compounds are characterized by their adhesion to thermoplastics such as PP or PA. Possible applications range from e-mobility to LED lighting and power tools.
